With large windows looking out to the beautiful West Terrace and the distant mountains, the Event Room opens to the West Terrace on one side and an Art Gallery on the other. The Event Room is a fantastic location providing us with plenty of uncrowded tables for dining and relaxing, and allows easy access to our self-serve dinner buffet.

What is the Parker Men’s Banquet?

A gift to you. As part of my personal purpose in life to “carry the message to alcoholics who still suffer,” It has been on my heart to bring an annual banquet to Colorado for several years. When I started my recovery journey in Southern California many years ago, I had the privilege of attending several AA banquets.

As I got busy “doing” in AA, I was eventually offered the opportunity to participate in planning a few of these banquets and was blown away by impact my small part played in creating these impactful events. This is what I offer each of you in return, a chance to experience the joy that comes from creating something out of nothing that will positively change your recovery, and all those that attend.

These annual banquets ranged in size from 100 to 500 guys, the events were held in golf course dining rooms in the dead of winter, and hotel ballrooms for the bigger groups for a night of food, fellowship, AA speakers and a Celebration of Recovery. I will admit that it was intimidating at first not knowing many people at these events, but I was hanging out with my home boys and that made me feel that everything was all going to be alright. And as the years went by, I was introduced to some local AA legends who shared their experience, strength, and hope with me and how service work in the AA community was a game changer for their recovery.

Over the years I have come to realized just how impactful these events became for me personally, and more importantly how impactful they were to new guys showing up who thought life had ended when their drinking careers stopped. Witnessing the camaraderie of guys who hadn’t seen one another In years, the welcoming spirit of AA, and an evening sharing experience strength and hope with one another and a couple hundred guys, was truly a positive and formative experience that has stayed with me for many years.

This past January I happened to be back in California when one of these banquets was held, and I realized that now was the time to bring a banquet home to Colorado. So in following my heart, I have reached out to a small group of guys who generally would not mix and asked each of you for your support in creating the first Parker Men’s Banquet.

Prelim Banquet – Who, What and Where Outline

Who: We acting as the initial committee, will work together to build the framework for the “show” as we like to call it. This initial year I will facilitate the committee to get this show started as I have a banquet format, readings, positions, sobriety count-down, task calendar and by laws from one of the banquets started over 20 years ago in California. This information can be reviewed by “us” the committee, and we can then vote to adopt the format as is or change it as decided by the committee. I have modified these documents to reflect our Parker Men’s Banquet and will hand these out on Saturday for all to review.

This will be what we go over in our next meeting (format, readings, positions and by laws), where we will discuss adopting or modifying as we see fit. After this we will start to discuss positions that each of us will participate in and then each of us will start to build out our teams under each position.

This is a great opportunity to get new guys into service and show them how to plan and execute things in recovery. Note that all committee positions rotate every year so no one person is “in charge” we are all “of service,” it is imperative to understand that in order for the Banquet to grow and prosper, no one person or group of people is ever actually “in charge,” we are all “in service” to those who would attend the banquet.

Who do we invite to attend? The ultimate objective is to invite men from multiple meetings together to celebrate an evening of recovery. While the banquet will be in Parker and a lot of guys from the Parker Men’s meeting will likely attend, meeting other men in recovery from around the Denver area is the real blessing of these banquets. Consider that when you meet a newcomer from Colorado Springs or Golden for example, who is looking for a Men’s meeting in one of these areas, it’s not likely we know of any meeting off the top of our head.

Yet we may have a chance of connecting him to someone from that area if we invite AA members from groups from outside our hometown to attend the banquet and reach out to meet these AA Brothers who we have yet to meet. If we open this up, the blessing will multiply is my experience, it will also demonstrate to other groups that there is more to AA than just meetings and instill the idea that those guys down in Parker really have it going on, maybe we should try something like that – pass it on.

What: What is the purpose of a banquet you may ask… Something special happens when you break bread with one another. Bring in good food, fellowship and a couple great AA speakers and you begin to create an experience, one that makes a lasting positive impression on those in attendance.

As the banquet grows there are also opportunities to add a fund raising component and an outreach to local recovery facilities. This is something I can share with you from personal experience when the time is right, for now focusing on launching the initial banquet should be our primary aim.

When: Harvest time, sometime in the first part of October, not to conflict with the Retreat.

Where: Actual location to be determined, should be somewhere around Parker. I have asked David G. to lead the charge in scouting locations this first year as he has considerable experience in curating attendee experiences. We can discuss ideas around options to consider for the location during our meeting, we have over six months to work this out so venue availability should not be an issue.

Why: Because “We absolutely insist on enjoying life” – From “The Family Afterwards” This line in the Big Book says it all. In a world filled with chaos and distractions, it is at times difficult to stop… and take the time to really enjoy life. While they say there are no guarantees in life, I say BS, your participation in creating this event will guarantee you a new experience in your recovery and open your mind to something like you have never experienced before. I say that from a position of experience in participating in the creation of these for over 30 years, it’s truly an experience you don’t want to miss.
